Unlike English, in French the future tense is a simple form (one-word). Both regular and irregular verbs have the same endings : -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ent.
1) Regular verbs
For regular verbs, the stem of the future tense is the entire infinitive verb (except for the -re verbs for which you have to drop the final e), so you just have to add the endings to the infinitive :
Parler (to speak)
je parlerai
|
Aimer (to love)
j’aimerai |
Regarder (to look)
je regarderai
|
Partir (to leave)
je partirai |
Finir (to finish)
je finirai |
Ressentir (to feel)
je ressentirai |
Ecrire (to write)
j’écrirai |
Comprendre (to understand)
je comprendrai |
Suivre (to follow)
je suivrai |
Example phrases :
L’année prochaine je partirai au Japon / Next year I will go to Japan
Mon frère et moi partirons pour Paris demain matin / My brother and I will leave for Paris tomorrow morning
Nous ne vendrons jamais cette maison ! / We will never sell this house !
Quand Paul arrivera, nous déjeunerons / When Paul gets here, we will have lunch
Nous prendrons le train à Rome / We will take the train in Rome
2) Irregular verbs
a. Verbs with irregular stems
The following verbs don’t follow a specific pattern and must be memorized. Remember that the future verb endings are the same for all verbs :
Aller (to go)
j’irai |
Avoir (to have)
j’aurai |
Courir (to run)
je courrai |
Devoir (to have to)
je devrai
|
Envoyer (to send)
j’enverrai
|
Être (to be)
je serai |
Faire (to do)
je ferai |
*Falloir (to be necessary)
– |
Mourir (to die)
je mourrai |
*Pleuvoir (to rain)
– |
Pouvoir (to be able to)
je pourrai |
Savoir (to know)
je saurai |
Venir (to come)
je viendrai |
Voir (to see)
je verrai |
Vouloir (to want)
je voudrai |
*Falloir and Pleuvoir are impersonal verbs so it means they have only one grammatical person: the third person singular.
Example phrases :
Je pourrai venir chez toi après le travail / I will be able to come to your house after work
Nous ferons une grande fête pour ton anniversaire ! / We will have a big party for your birthday !
Il faudra que je parte avant minuit ! / I will have to leave before midnight !
Irez-vous en Italie l’année prochaine ? / Will you go to Italy next year ?
b. Verbs with spelling changes
Verbs with spelling changes in the present tense have the same spelling change in the stem. However there is one exception : verbs like espérer (to hope) and préférer (to prefer) are regular in the future, so there’s no spelling change : je préférerai, tu préféreras, il préférera, nous préférerons, vous préférerez, ils préféreront

3) Uses of the future tense
a. In French the future tense is used like the English future (will, shall). It can replace the near future (aller + infinitive), however it may express a more distant future than the aller + infinitive construction.
The future tense is also usually used in more formal context.
b. With if-clause sentences using the present tense, the main clause verb is in the future (like in English).
Examples :
Si je peux je prendrai le train / If I can, I will take the train
Si nous sommes libres nous irons en Italie / If we are free we will go to Italy
Si Julie est d’accord, nous viendrons le mois prochain ! / If Julie agrees, we will come next month !
Si becomes s’ before il/ils :
S‘il pleut je prendrai mon parapluie / If it rains I will take my umbrella
S‘ils partent au Mexique, j’irai avec eux ! / If they go to Mexico, I’ll go with them!
